Christmas Cactus

Christmas Cactus

All summer it sat by the back door,
soaking the sun rays and drinking
the seasonal rain. One night
it fell off its perch, maybe a raccoon's
doing, but I soon made it right.

It rarely bloomed but I'm happy
having it. I brought it in
when fall turned chilly.
As if a reward it started to flower.

I'd forgotten how vivid
the blooms are. The simple
brilliant blossoms seem
to hold back the gloomy, gray sky.
