Fog in Falmouth

Fog in Falmouth

Fog moved in from the sea overnight.
This morning a gauzy veil covers our world.
From the distance, Nobska Light's horn plays
its plaintive two notes in seven second measures.
Squirrels and chickadees move more slowly,
they seem to know that those who would make
a meal of them have their powers dimmed.

Colors are muted and calls deadened.
The pond's flickering diamonds today are gone,
swimming swans are merely white blots.
Outside noises are now a quiet hum.
Caws of the crows seem less harsh
and the stand of trees appears as a forest.

There is the beauty of crystal bright days,
Subdued vistas and sounds of
fog have their own magical charm.

  1. Wonderfully atmospheric! You set the scene and mood with all senses. It's the kind of weather, atmosphere and light that makes New England endlessly charming and even bewitching.
