a glance back
Mr. Gray the janitor left a heavy wire case
by the door. Miss Holt brought
to each second grader a glass milk bottle,
with a paper straw that often
buckled. sometimes the milk was plain
sometime chocolate. occasionally there
was an apple, infrequently orange.
Jonathan Bright Elementary School
was a neighborhood school with
kindergarten to grade six, one class each.
all learned about Dick, Jane and
dog Spot. “see Spot run” “watch Jane play”.
and the class learned to read.
the rooms were big with high ceilings
and huge windows on two sides.
each classroom had a cloakroom.
one day an army ambulance came to show
us what the War Stamps bought.
in the cellar was the furnace
that Mr. Gray fed coal during winter.
now and then everyone went there
for air raid drills. twice a week
the public library in the basement opened,
where everyone learned of the world.
Those were low tech days and maybe
inefficient. Today there is a sign at
the building “for sale by the city”.
