Vacation from Yemen

Vacation from Yemen

On leave from the Peace Corps.
A short plane ride to Athens,
to a twelve dollar hotel -
the bathroom down the hall.

A month with no calls to prayer
a month in a urbane diverse city
a month with beer to be had
a month with icons and history
     of western civilization.

The splendors in the National Museum
intimacy of the Folk Art Museum
bravado of the Military Museum
glories and horrors in the Jewish Museum

Eating loukaniko with a  beer,
across the street meticulous scholars
excavate an ancient ruin.

Eating baklava, drinking thick coffee
in an outdoor café watching those
who walk in the footsteps of
Socrates and Plato pass by.
Visit department stores, galleries
public gardens and temple and market ruins.

A month to refresh,
a month to revitalize,
a month without care,
a month to appreciate.
