Remembered
Remember
In a cabinet, wrapped with care,
a treasure box bought decades ago
in a narrow aisle, at a market in Seoul.
It caught my eye then, it catches it now.
The box inlayed with mother of pearl-
two birds among branches with plum blossoms.
still strong the aroma of cedar,
color and grain shows through the clear lacquer.
Cards in different scripts from friends, some
remember, some not. Gifts of a red coral key chain
from Okinawa, paper wallet from Japan and
pictures from the Philippines, all in the box.
In the box flashes of then, propelled to now,
flashes of who we were and thought we were,
flashes of who we might be today-
the brown inlayed memory box.
