a serene space
my Japanese garden
is about two strides
by a stride and a half.
surrounded by shore rocks,
a mock river of beach stones
winds its way through.
local moss grows on each side
of the token brook.
the patch in no way compares
with the superb gardens
in Kyoto or Kamakura.
it’s a meager pretense of
those which have been
cared for by generations of Zen
monks and nuns. but still mine
brings to mind the great and
beautiful grounds of rocks,
stones, moss and earth.
I’m calmed by the serene spirit
of this small bit of earth.
